Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS)
Our part-time continuing professional development programmes are developed drawing on our university’s expertise, with a particular focus on practical application and research. The Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS for short) open up a wide range of opportunities to broaden and deepen your professional skills — paving the way for important next steps in your career and enabling you to explore new areas of work.
The CAS programme lasts one to two semesters and is usually worth 15 credit points (CP). One CP is equivalent to 30 hours – so you should expect a workload of around 450 hours, including self-study.
Entry requirements
A CAS is an academic continuing education programme. To enrol, you will need a first university degree or an equivalent professional qualification, as well as at least one year’s professional experience, as you should be able to apply the theoretical content to your professional or voluntary work.
The entry requirements and details on how to apply can be found on the individual programme pages. There you will also find the relevant contact persons if you have any questions regarding the programme content or organisational matters, particularly concerning the application process, admission and the recognition of your previous qualifications.
Overview and modular system
As part of a modular system, all CAS programmes that you can study with us can be credited towards at least one continuing professional development Master’s programme at our university or towards a DAS.
In addition, some of our CAS programmes offer the option of starting with a smaller learning module – known as a ‘microcredential’ – before progressing to the CAS programme, and then having this credited towards the CAS.
Each certificate can only be credited towards one other course once.
Please note that not all of our CAS programmes are offered on a regular basis or every semester; this applies in particular to the CAS programmes in the field of geragogy. You can find further information and dates on the page for the relevant CAS programme. To do so, follow the relevant link in the table.

Please note that, under certain conditions, you may enrol on academic further education courses without a first degree, but you cannot undertake a Master’s degree programme designed for further education.
