Department of Psychology

at the Faculty of Humanities

Psychology – defined as ‘the science of individual behaviour and cognitive processes’ – studies people from birth to death, examining their experiences and actions, as well as their social relationships. Through empirical research, psychologists seek, amongst other things, to understand why people behave as they do, how they develop and how they differ from one another.

I am a psychologist because there can be hardly anything more fascinating than studying human behaviour and experience!

Prof. Dr. Jutta Kienbaum Department of Psychology

I became a psychologist in order to develop a deeper understanding of human behaviour and experience. I was fascinated by the prospect of applying scientific insights to everyday problems and thereby making a tangible and practical contribution to overcoming real-life challenges.

Dr. Janis Jung Department of Psychology

I am a psychologist because psychology, as the science of human experience and behaviour, deals with an incredibly wide range of fascinating questions. I find it truly fascinating to be able to explore this diversity creatively using empirical and experimental methods.

Teaching

At our university, psychology is an integral part of the educational sciences and is a compulsory subject in all teacher training programmes. The teaching of psychology focuses in particular on the sub-fields of developmental psychology, social psychology, educational psychology, pedagogical psychology, methodology and diagnostics, and clinical psychology.

Furthermore, psychology also complements teaching in non-teacher-training degree programmes, particularly in the Bachelor’s programmes in Early Childhood Education (KIP) and Sport, Health and Leisure Education (SGF). The expertise of the department’s staff also enriches the curriculum in the Master’s programmes in Migration, Education and Democracy (MiBiD) and Digital Education: Psychology, Cognition and Design (DiBi).
