University Certificate Contact Studies in Adult Education

Continuing professional development

The part-time Adult Education programme is the right choice for anyone who takes on educational responsibilities in their profession: in continuing professional development, in the training of new colleagues, in managing in-house training, or in teaching at technical, vocational and mainstream schools. The programme is grounded in learning theory, clearly structured and designed to promote active learning and reflective practice. You can apply the didactic concepts and teaching and learning methods gained from the programme directly to your practical work. Experience how your approach to adult education changes – step by step.

Whilst working full-time, with a manageable time commitment, you will keep abreast of the latest developments in academia and research.  Successful completion of the contact-based study module serves as proof of pedagogical competence for many educational providers and companies. Furthermore, following supervision, the Karlsruhe University of Education awards a recognised university certificate.

Learning outcomes and skills

The contact-based course can be undertaken whilst working, without the need to enrol on a full-time or part-time programme. It comprises ten days of face-to-face teaching, spread over four semesters. All face-to-face sessions take place at weekends, taking into account the main school holidays. You will learn how to

  • successfully design adult education programmes,
  • plan courses and learning environments in a didactically consistent manner,
  • effectively apply methods of individualised and collaborative learning,
  • understand the importance of the learning atmosphere and interaction,
  • apply and practise the basics of conversation techniques and conflict resolution, and
  • reflect on one’s own experiences in adult education.

Course structure and dates

The contact-based programme combines elements of face-to-face and distance learning with forms of peer-based practical guidance. Between the on-campus study phases, meetings take place in pairs and small groups. There, you will report on your progress within a peer group and work through the study material and exercises together. These study phases are also supported intensively upon request.

At the end of the programme, you will receive a recognised certificate of attendance. Following successful supervision, a university certificate will also be issued. This certificate can be credited towards a further degree programme (for example, a Master’s degree) on an individual basis, subject to additional requirements.
