Department of Educational Sciences with a Focus on Extracurricular Fields

at the Faculty of Humanities

Within the Department, particular emphasis is placed on fostering individual openness to new perspectives, on recognising and critically reflecting upon institutional strategies of normalisation, and on transcending disciplinary boundaries by incorporating global, cross-cultural (intercultural), peace studies and health education into research and teaching. Critical – socially engaged – reflection and methodological diversity form the cornerstones of academic work at this institute.

The Department is involved in our university’s priority areas of ‘Educational Processes in the Digital World’ (in a co-leading role until 2025) and ‘Education in a Democratic Society’ (since 2024); within the institute, the Master’s programmes in “Educational Science” (2010–2020; Head: Prof. Dr Stroß) and “Migration, Education and Democracy” (formerly “Interculturalism, Migration and Multilingualism”) (since 2023, Head: Prof. Dr Gomolla) have been established.

Professorships

The areas of research and teaching represented at the Department of Educational Science, with a focus on extracurricular fields, are shaped by the profiles of the two professorships based at the Institute:

At the Chair of Intercultural Pedagogy and Educational Equity, Professor Dr Mechtild Gomolla and her team address issues relating to upbringing and education in a society of migration, as well as international comparative educational research. Key themes include the consequences and requirements of international (refugee) migration, social pluralisation, inequality, racism and the potential for far-right violence, also against the backdrop of the legacy of the Nazi and colonial past. A key area of research and teaching also lies in the examination of action plans for an equity-oriented educational practice within the interplay of professionalisation, institutional development and pedagogical practice.

As holder of the Chair of General Educational Science, specialising in health education, Prof.Dr Annette M. Stroß addresses issues relating to education, upbringing and socialisation, including current issues in education policy and quality assurance, research on scholarship and historiography, the history of pedagogical and medical science and professions, as well as current issues in health education. In her current research and teaching projects, she is exploring the possibilities of – a perception-sensitive – expansion of an overly narrow understanding of content and methodology within educational science and educational research (for example, with regard to the narrative-aesthetic transcendence of an instrumental understanding of ‘health’).
