Department of Physical Education and Sports
Physical activity and sport are of great importance to society as a whole. Our institute focuses on physical activity and sport across the entire lifespan, in both research and teaching.

The Sports Shoes Gang
Well-developed motor skills appropriate to a child’s age are essential for the overall development of young people. Children with clearly noticeable motor difficulties should therefore be supported and encouraged. This is best done at school, as this is where all children can be reached. But how can this be achieved in a meaningful and beneficial way? This is precisely where our university’s ‘Sportschuhbande’ project comes in. There is currently a lack of up-to-date approaches to remedial teaching in schools that focus on movement, play and sport. The ‘Sportschuhbande’ is a theory-based and scientifically supported programme to promote physical activity and sport, which is offered at a number of primary schools in Karlsruhe.

SchwimmFix
An increasing number of children are leaving primary school without the ability to swim, which affects their safety and motor development. To counteract this, the ‘SchwimmFix’ intervention project was launched, which teaches children basic swimming skills and builds their confidence in the water.

The COMO study
The COMO study is a national study examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical and mental health and health behaviours of children and young people, taking into account socio-ecological contexts in Germany. The three-year collaborative project involving the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Karlsruhe University of Education (PHKA), the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, the University of Konstanz and Ruhr University Bochum will run until 2026 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The MoMo Study 2.0
The MoMo Study 2.0 is a national long-term study into the development of motor skills, physical and sporting activity, and health among children and young people in Germany. It investigates how societal changes – such as digitalisation, migration or the COVID-19 pandemic – influence the physical development of young people and identifies temporal and periodic trends in motor skills.
MoMo 2.0 is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) and is being carried out under the leadership of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with the Karlsruhe University of Education, the University of Konstanz and Humboldt University of Berlin.
The role of the Karlsruhe University of Education
Within the consortium, the Karlsruhe University of Education bears primary responsibility for research into motor development and body measurements. The Motor Skills Working Group analyses the nationwide survey data and regularly publishes scientific analyses on the motor performance of children and young people. Furthermore, for the first time, research is being conducted into the experience of stress and the physical and psychological symptoms of stress in children and young people in the context of activity and motor skills.
Objectives and significance
With its fourth, nationally representative wave of data collection, MoMo 2.0 continues the successful MoMo Study 2003–2022. For over 20 years, the data collected has provided a unique basis for scientific analyses, health policy decisions and education-related recommendations for action in Germany.
Full details on the survey waves, results, publications and study methodology can be found on the KIT’s MoMo 2.0 study page.
Enquiries regarding secondary data analyses on motor performance should be addressed to PD Dr Anke Hanssen-Doose or Dr Claudia Niessner.

Active Kid
The local neighbourhood provides children with a key avenue for physical activity and play. Analysing, evaluating and implementing interventions in this area across different local authorities forms a cornerstone of ActiveKid, which contributes to more active urban and local development through participatory play space concepts. The research examines not only the effects on physical activity but also on social integration and economic prosperity.
Further information can be found in the research database.

Pump tracks – scientific facts for optimal local planning
According to the research carried out as part of this project, there is as yet no known German-language study that has scientifically compared fixed-track facilities, such as dirt tracks or asphalt tracks, with one another. In this study, we are conducting a direct comparison of both types to determine what a local authority needs to consider to ensure optimal implementation.
In the second phase, the effects on children and young people in terms of motor skills, physical activity and socio-psychological developmental factors will be examined. Pump tracks are not only great fun; they are also thought to contribute to promoting physical activity and, consequently, to health promotion. Exactly how, to what extent and with what intensity – these are the questions that will be answered.

Support for Development and Learning in Schools – Active and Healthy Schools
Physical activity supports learning! This project focuses on linking learning with physical activity and on creating and developing learning environments that, from a holistic perspective, engage and support pupils. In collaboration with various schools, the potential of physical activity for learning at school is being (re)discovered, for example through active learning across all school subjects, incorporating movement or relaxation breaks into lessons, and creating learning environments that encourage physical activity. This is also being carried out with the involvement of students in the form of supervised qualification projects and teaching-learning collaborations, as the ‘Active and Healthy School’ is a key area of study.
Examples:
- physical active learning – nature class (PD Dr Anke Hanssen-Doose)
- Physical activity breaks in subject-specific lessons (concept, piloting and effects) (PD Dr Anke Hanssen-Doose, Dr Elke Opper, Prof. Dr Annette Worth)
- Active and engaging teaching of subject content (PD Dr Anke Hanssen-Doose, Prof. Dr Annette Worth). As part of teaching and learning partnerships and various qualification projects, practical examples of implementation have been developed and are being continuously improved.
- School development through the ‘Active School’ initiative, in which the Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim Integrated Comprehensive School is implementing newly developed quality criteria for a physically active school over the course of a year, whilst the process is being evaluated.

Tiger Kids
TigerKids Relaxation is an extension module to TigerKids Nutrition and TigerKids Exercise. In 2010, TigerKids Relaxation was trialled and evaluated in seven settings (1 primary school, 6 nursery schools) in Hesse and Baden-Württemberg. The aim of the research was to develop and evaluate a relaxation programme for nursery schools. A TigerKids Relaxation booklet is available, containing 20 detailed relaxation sessions for nursery schools. In addition, a presentation has been developed for use in working with parents at nursery schools; nursery teachers can use this to inform parents about the concept, objectives and content of TigerKids.
